Facebook Tragedy

By Raghavendra Rao of Poornaprajna Cyber Quest

AFP has reported recently from London that a British man named Edward Richardson, aged 41 years, stabbed and killed his wife Sarah, 26 years in a frenzied brutal attack at her parents’ home in Biddulph, Central England. He has been convicted in the trial and sentenced to imprisonment for at least 18 years. The cause for murder was that Sarah had mentioned her relationship in Facebook as ‘single’ even though she was married to Edward Richardson.

Facebook is a socializing network founded by Mark Zuckerberg on February 5, 2004 as ‘thefacebook.com’. Mark, who was attending Harvard University as sophomore, initially limited its membership to Harvard University students but later extended to other colleges in the Ivy League. Further, it was extended to include any university student, then high school students and finally to any one aged 13 years and over. The website currently has more than 150 million active users worldwide. Facebook has become a popular icon and its members feel proud to be a part of the same.

Facebook is a platform for its members to freely express their thoughts. The website is so popular that it is seen by everyone in the region and hence any false information projected in the Facebook would have its impact immediately. Sentiment filled Mark Richardson was probably so offended that he could not digest the information entered into the website by his wife that she is single and in a frenzy killed her. It is unfortunate that one has to pay her life for such a small mistake which could have been sorted out and set right with a little prudent effort.
