Magical Abortion

By Raghavendra Rao of Poornaprajna Cyber Quest

Indian women, be careful about recent advertisements in television channels about a so-called ‘emergency contraceptive’ drug that prevents pregnancy if taken within 72 hours. It reminds the couple who have forgotten to take precautionary measure before sex that they have an answer in this magical product.

Sudden termination of pregnancy by pills involves chemical action inside the body eventually leading to side effects. It is not safe to use such medicines. Both the government and the concerned medical association would have done well to educate general public about the ill-effects of such medication. Awareness among the public about such drugs is required. Women if not educated would suffer health from such drugs. This drug is classified as Schedule H drug and should be administered under a qualified medical practitioner’s supervision.

Family planning is advised and is in the interest of the nation. However, the methods adopted for such planning should be safe and healthier. One should not be tempted to instant removal of pregnancy by any method whether usage of pills or adopting crude methods. It is bound to affect the health of the user even may cause death.

It is astonishing that the health ministry has permitted marketing of this product in India. Has the government yielded to pharmaceutical lobby? Marketing of this product in the name of ‘contraceptive’ is sure to have telling effect on women’s health. Women in India are entitled to know about the effects of this product on their health and the government has a duty to educate women on this aspect.

Society would not welcome a remedy that would deter the very life of its user. It is not ethical to allow the channels of television to beam advertisements of such products which gullible women would innocently believe and act upon.

Hon’ble Health Minister, would you please ban marketing of such products and stop related advertisements.
