Society For Protection Of Oppressed Women (SPOW)
By Raghavendra Rao of Poornaprajna Cyber Quest
Hindu culture preaches that a father can administer his home better than his wife. This practice has pervaded the Indian society and history confirms that patriarchal system is prevalent from very olden days. May be this is not without basis or hard facts. Women for various reasons in those olden days were restricted to the activities of kitchen and children nursing. With the evolution of modern society women have been sharing the responsibility of managing the families as much as their male counterpart, if not more. However, cry for equality for women has continued. In today’s world, women also work in offices, earn money, contribute their earnings to make both ends meet. Her ability to work and earn has made women to think that she is not inferior to her male counterpart which attitude has been the cause of frequent quarrels with her husband that was not the case in olden days. Daily skirmishes even go to the extent of seeking divorce. Nowadays divorce cases – irrespective of religion, caste, status or standing in the society, rich or poor – are increasing in the Family Courts. When women are no more limited to kitchen, when women are becoming court birds for divorce and remarriage, when women’s security are guarded by the government organizations like National Commission for Women, when women are protected by laws for dowry and domestic violence, there is no necessity to cry any more for equality. The issues of equality for women are more taken advantages of by politicians for popularity and vote gains during elections. Women are no more weaker section. They are in army, navy and air force. They are practically in every sphere of activities – as bus conductors, auto-rikshaw drivers, saloon operators, hotel managers and what not. They have intruded even into the area of worship of God as priests. Women have to organize themselves to prevent attacks from anti-social elements to protect themselves, to overcome fear of reporting domestic violence and harassment. Immediate need of the hour is prevention of attacks against women and speedy justice to victims of such attacks. To eradicate evil and cruel acts and emancipate from male bastion, women need to form Society for Protection of Oppressed Women (SPOW) at village and ward level with the aid of local government. SPOWs have to look into the problems of women in their area and resolve their grievances, if need be seek police action and even intervention of courts of law. SPOWs at village and ward level shall form a federation at state and national level. SPOWs should be accorded recognition by the government and treated as agents for receiving complaints, liaison with local police and equip them to take the matters to courts of law. Strengthening of the institution of SPOWs and creating awareness of functioning of such societies would go a long way in ushering in a new era in emancipation of oppressed women in India.
