What do you know about Rave Parties?
By Raghavendra Rao of Poornaprajna Cyber Quest
Drugs, alcohol, loud music, scantily clad boys and girls dancing all the night in a huge open space beamed with laser lights and illuminated to a colorful taste. This is the scene one imagines at the very mention of a ‘rave party’. Here is a picture of what a rave party is all about. Entrants to rave parties are charged with entrance fee and they are commercial shows. They are a common gathering these days in India which has been in existence since decades in western countries. Rave parties include in their agenda dance events with fast paced electronic music and light shows showering laser beams. They go on all night till dawn. Drugs are available for consumption at a cost. Drugs used are acids, crystal meth, ketamine (animal tranquiliser) etc. When consumed, the person looses his perception of time and entire night of twelve hours from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. seems twelve minutes to him. Rave parties are enjoyed with high level of drug use. There is no dress code. Men and women dress casually. A rave party is incomplete if not accompanied with loud ‘rave’ music. They have music one can dance to and just hang out with friends. Trance music is played. DJs and performers play musical instruments like electronica and tune trance and techno music to the accompaniment of laser light shows, projected images and artificial fog. Music would be in a high pitch at such parties and therefore are held mostly in the outskirts of cities and commonly in farms, fields or beaches. Some prefer to use fanciful glow sticks on their dress to cause reflections from laser beams that are flooded to the show and thus draw attention of the gathering. Dressing at the rave parties: What a woman wears on has always been observed with great interest especially when dressing for a party comes to play. For rave parties many women and men come in a pair of jeans and a top. It is an extremely casual atmosphere. Since it is an all-night affair, participants come in whatever they are comfortable in. One should not overdress in a party where huge attendance is expected. Illegality of rave parties: Liquor is stocked in total violation of Section 36 of the Excise Act. It amounts to illegal possession of liquor without any license. Permission must be taken from the Excise Commission to stock and serve large quantities of liquor. Loud music amounts to disturbing neighbors and the calm of the surroundings. Drugs are sold for money. These are grave violations. One can be booked under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, if one is caught doing drugs. The punishment varies from six months to life imprisonment depending on the quantity of drugs. When any party charges an entry fee, without license, it ceases to be a private party and becomes a commercial affair. Hence, thrown open to scrutiny of legal eye. Some people dress sensually. It amounts to obscenity and attracts provision of Section 294 of Indian Penal Code. Offenders are punishable with imprisonment that may extend to three months or with fine or both. As per a definition any dressing or words or signing that attracts undue attention and gets noticed is obscene. What is obscene to one person may be art to another. Interpretation of the term obscenity varies from one person to another. If a party is hosted at one’s residence and the guests are treated to music and liquor, then no law is violated. But if entrance fee is charged for the party, then the party changes its character. It is not a private party but becomes a commercial one without license in total violation of the law. Legal or illegal, rave parties are thriving as Information Technology industries growing beyond expectations. Software engineers and other employees work over time and feel like getting treated to entertainment like rave parties during weekends.
